How do you know which values to assign to a dhcp server for a c class address?

also how do I find out a server port number? Please help

How do you know which values to assign to a dhcp server for a c class address?
A Class C network uses the first three octets as the network id, and the last one as the host id. If you want to maximize the number of clients, then the range of the last octect would be 1 through 254.

However, in a typicall business environement, only 1 thru 199 are used. This allows room for static ips or reservastions for things like servers, printers, etc that require an ip address that will not change.

Reply:It depends on your network design. A typical c class allows for a range like 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254. This would allow you to have 254 hosts in this subnet. If your network needed to be seperated for seperate subnets like 192.168.1.0/25 then your ranges would be 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.126 and 192.168.1.129-192.168.1.254. It all depends on how many hosts your dhcp needs to serve. Be more specific on server port number??
