I have owned the car since new. I have owned a lot of cars in my life and the pads I expected, but the rotors at 40K??? Am I being taken for a ride (no pun intended).?
I have a 2005 Mercedes C-Class with 40K. Should I replace the rotors?
I have a 2005 Ford Excursion with 67, 000 miles on it, big vehicle hard on brakes, LOL. I am just now needing to replace the rotors. It's vibrates my car when I stop. If yours is vibrating when you stop, you might need to. Get a second opinion if you are not sure.
Reply:The only reasons for replacing your rotors at this point are:
1. They are worn down to the point they can't be turned(resurfaced)
2. You have worn down your pads to the point that the pad indicators have cut a groove in your rotors deeper than what resurfacing them allows.
3. They have been warped for some reason
Those are the only reasons to have your rotors replaced, and with only 40k on the vehicle you should seriously find out the reason for that suggestion and please get a second opinion.
Reply:No they are being honest with you. You HAVE to change the rotors and pads at the same time. Reason being is that the pads put a groove in the rotors and then when you replace the pads only it doesn't match up with the rotors. Do not grind them down either that was the 1970's way of doing it. All your doing is putting off replacing the rotors for 6 months. We use to work on Mercedes all the time. Other things to keep in mind with this car, get the transmission flushed, trust me, we replaced a lot of them. It couldn't hurt to do a brake flush also. Remember you are driving a Mercedes they are not cheap to work on but find a independent shop not the dealer and save yourself 30% in parts in labor. Find a local Mercedes club and they can help you find a good shop. GOOD LUCK!
Reply:some mercedes you are not able to just cut the rotors you have to replace them. if i were u and since i was there i would get some slotted rotors they will make the car stop a lot better. good luck
